This project employs thousands of plastic beads, each measuring six millimeters in diameter, to stand in for cell receptors. Arranged in their densest possible configuration across a one-square-meter surface—totaling approximately 42,767 beads—these elements symbolize a spectrum of receptor types, including G protein-coupled, tyrosine kinase, ion channel, nuclear, integrin, and immune receptors, in proportions that echo their biological significance.
By evoking the intricate density of receptors enshrouding the cellular membrane, the work underscores their essential role in sensing and responding to an array of molecular signals—hormones, neurotransmitters, pharmaceuticals, and countless other messengers. This visualization becomes both a diagram and a meditation, illuminating how receptors orchestrate the delicate exchanges that sustain growth, perception, and immunity.
